A Cherry[1][2] is a special item found in Super Mario Bros. 2 and its Game Boy Advance remake Super Mario Advance. When Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad collects five Cherries, an invincibility-granting Starman floats from the ground. Cherries appear in abundance in Subcon, and many can be found in every level. In the GBA remake, the character will say 'Lucky!' each time one is collected, and a chime will play upon grabbing every fifth one. They also appear in the slot machines of the same game. When a player lines up even one of them, they receive extra lives (a 1-Up for one in the first slot, 2-Up if the first two slots have cherries, and 5-Up for all three; this is changed to a 3-Up maximum in the remakes). Cherries make a minor appearance in Yoshi, after the player clears levels 19 through 21 of the B-Type game, rewarding the player 900 points. Cherries also appear in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom II stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Mario Party 4, Cherries appear in the Bowser minigameFruits of Doom, as one of the potential fruits on Bowser's list. SMB2's 'slot machine' sequence was changed (for the worse, IMO), however they also added the ability to reselect your character after you die. Also, the 2-player 'Versus' mode they added to SMB3. Back then the slot machine and card flipping minigames were merely a fun way to grab special items and extra lives, but it prepared us for a life addicted to video poker.
The Bonus Chance in Super Mario Advance - This article is about the slot machine game from Super Mario Bros. 2. For the bonus game from Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, see Bonus Chance!.
The Bonus Chance (also named bonus game, Bonus Stage[1], Slot Machine[2], and Slot Game[3]) is a minigame played at the end of every level in Super Mario Bros. 2, provided Mario or another character has collected at least one coin. If they end the course with no coins collected, the Bonus Chance screen displays but the game is immediately skipped.
